Home Visiting Volunteer

Middlesex Association for the Blind (MAB)

In just an hour or two each week, you could provide invaluable support to a blind or partially sighted person, helping with practical tasks. This will help them lead an independent life.

You will be required to visit the person with sight loss in their home, befriending and relieving their isolation. You may be required to assist them with reading, writing, shopping and other everyday tasks.

A friendly, sensitive and professional manner is essential.

Our Volunteers provide support for blind or partially sighted people throughout the Boroughs of Barnet, Brent, Ealing, Enfield, Haringey, Harrow, Hillingdon, Hounslow and Richmond.

They are a very important part of MAB and contribute in many ways towards achieving MAB's mission of protecting the independence of people with VI. Volunteers bring special experiences and expertise, enabling MAB to extend and enhance its services, making them more accessible.

When you become a MAB volunteer, you will be given a full introduction to who we are, what we do and how we do it. This will include details of our policies, which clearly state our commitment to volunteers and to making voluntary work accessible to everyone.

Time is flexible. Required on any day of the week, am or pm. We encourage volunteers to commit a minimum of 1 hour per week (or to offer a 2-hour visit if available every other week only) to help them create a bond with their service user. Volunteers are required as soon as possible but you have to be able to commit to volunteering for a minimum period of 10 months.

All volunteers will be asked to complete an application form which includes giving two references. Once references have been obtained, there will be a face to face interview and if successful, a DBS check will be carried out. Training will be given soon afterwards.

We cover travel expenses within your given borough.
