Volunteer Trustee (Legal and/or HR Specialist)
Fresh Horizons CNB – Supporting Homeless Individuals to Rebuild Their Lives
Location: Remote / London-based (occasional meetings)
Time Commitment: Approx. 6–8 hours per month
Term: 1–3 years (renewable)
About Us
Fresh Horizons CNB is a charitable organisation dedicated to preventing homelessness and empowering individuals to rebuild their lives through safe accommodation, support planning and pathways into independence. As we grow, we are strengthening our Board of Trustees to ensure robust governance, strong safeguarding practice, and long-term sustainability.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a passionate and skilled Trustee with Legal and/or Human Resources expertise to join our Board. This role is ideal for someone who wants to use their professional knowledge to make a meaningful impact on the lives of vulnerable people.
As a Trustee, you will help steer the strategic direction of the charity, ensure we remain compliant with legal and regulatory obligations, and support our leadership team with specialist advice in your field.
Key Responsibilities
As a Trustee
Contribute to the strategic oversight and governance of the charity.
Ensure compliance with charity law, financial regulations, safeguarding obligations and all relevant statutory requirements.
Provide challenge, support, and accountability to the senior leadership team.
Champion the charity’s mission, values and commitment to improving outcomes for people experiencing homelessness.
Attend quarterly board meetings, occasional sub-committee meetings and annual strategic planning sessions.
Legal / HR Responsibilities (depending on your expertise)
If Legal:
Provide guidance on charity governance, contracts, risk, data protection and regulatory obligations.
Advise on policies, agreements, and service-level contracts.
Help the charity manage legal risks proactively and ethically.
If HR:
Support the development of robust HR policies and procedures (e.g., recruitment, performance, discipline, safeguarding).
Advise on volunteer and staff wellbeing, compliance and best practice.
Offer guidance during recruitment of key roles and organisational restructuring.
What We’re Looking For
Professional experience in law, human resources, or both.
Understanding of (or willingness to learn about) the charity and homelessness sectors.
Commitment to good governance, ethical leadership and safeguarding.
Strong communication, judgment, and decision-making skills.
A collaborative, supportive and values-driven outlook.
Eligibility to serve as a UK charity trustee.
