Somali speaking Hayaan Project volunteers

The Somali Hayaan Project by Mind in Harrow offers a welcoming and supportive space for Harrow’s Somali community to connect, share experiences, and focus on mental wellbeing.

We are looking for Somali volunteers of all ages and backgrounds who reflect the diversity of the Somali culture in the borough of Harrow.

You can expect us to give you:

• Training to give you the information needed to carry out this role

• regular support and supervision

• insurance cover (apart from car insurance)

• all reasonable expenses

In return, we expect you to:

• Volunteer with us for at least a year

• give time on a regular basis.

• attend regular supervision meetings and ongoing training sessions 3-4 times a year.

• We understand that circumstances change- if you're ever unable to continue, we simply ask for at least one month's notice so we can plan accordingly.

• adhere to the scheme’s guidelines and policies.

What skills do I need?

To be a Hayaan Project volunteer you will need:

• to speak fluent Somali and English (ideally)

• some appreciation of mental health issues as a service user, carer, family member

• organisational skills

• willingness to share Somali cultural perspective with other people

• to be able to work as part of a team

• warmth, understanding and sensitivity

• ability to listen, and to accept people as they are.

• willingness to learn from your own and others' experience
